General

What is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a set of comprehensive privacy laws regulation that governs the protection of consumers’ personal data in the European Union. In April 2016, after more than four years of negotiation, the European Union approved the GDPR, with the goals of strengthening and harmonizing data protection regulation for consumers across the EU.One of the primary goals of the GDPR is to give EU citizens control of their personal data.

Data collected online is used for some key online needs, including:

  • Showing you personalized and relevant content
  • Serving you applicable and relevant advertisements
  • Saving your logins to sites
  • Storing items in your shopping baskets
  • Ensuring publishers get paid for their content through personalized advertising

Through your Permisio Account Home, you can easily set privacy preferences for the websites and apps you visit online. These preferences then inform publishers, brands, and their partners, about how your data may be used.

Your privacy is our number one priority. Our mission is to help you protect your online presence. You can read more about our data practices here, in our privacy policy.

Today, publishers, brands, and a variety of companies they work with use data to provide a better content experience, to serve more applicable or relevant ads, or to save your preferences to their site the next time you visit.

Under GDPR, you, the consumer, get to choose who has access to your data and how they can use it. That’s why you see so many cookie pop ups – every website is asking you for your privacy preferences and with whom they can share your data with.

Within our Account Home, we aim to help you:

  • Understand what data is being collected today and what its being used for
  • Manage your online privacy preferences with speed and ease for a better internet experience.

These preferences then inform publishers, brands, and their partners, about how your data may be used, if at all. The goal is for you to have more control over your online data. Advertising

Personalized advertising is a method by which brands can reach people who are already aware or interested in their products or services through ads. That’s why you’ll see ads about those shoes or the video game you were looking at before – this is because the brand thinks you’re interested in that product and wants to keep it on your radar. The end goal is to provide people with a more relevant ad experience, and to make sure brands are reaching the right audience.

Publishers help brands deliver personalized advertising because of the data available through cookies, which shows a users’ browsing activity and product interests, among other things. Through that data, brands are able to provide consumers more relevant ads. The goal is less ads, more relevancy.

At Permisio, one of the things we’re focused on is helping you understand what data is used for what purposes, so you can make more informed decisions about your online data.

As a consumer, you play an important role in the ad ecosystem: you interact with publishers and brands online on a daily basis and explain to them what you like – from content to products – based on where you visit. Publishers and brands then use information about your online visits to provide you with the most relevant experience – from content to ads.

Brands pay publishers more money for ads that they know are reaching the right people – this is where your data really comes in. The more money a publisher can make through personalized advertising, the more likely it is that content will stay free and accessible.

At Permisio, one of the things we’re focused on is helping you understand what your data is used for, so you can make more informed decisions about your online data that powers that free digital content. Your choices impact the revenue that a publisher can make and thus their ability to continue creating free and accessible content.

Advertising is an important revenue source for publishers – according to a 2019 Digiday study, ads are the brightest spot for online publishers revenue. This revenue helps power publishers’ business and allows them to continue creating the content you love and rely on. Without this revenue, the publishers you know and love could disappear.

Your choices impact the revenue that a publisher can make and thus their ability to continue creating the free content you love.

A variety of data can be stored as you browse the web. This can include your browsing and clicking history, saved logins to any of your favorite or frequented sites, or the type of device and browser being used.

Collected data helps you with conveniences like:

  • saving your login data,
  • remembering the items you’ve placed in your shopping cart,
  • or remembering what city you like to check the weather in.

Collected data also helps publishers and brands:

  • Ensure publishers get paid for their content through personalized advertising
  • Show you personalized and relevant content
  • Serve you applicable and relevant advertisements

Permisio

In your Permisio Account Home, easily set your own privacy preferences. You can save your privacy preferences for one specific site, or set up a general profile to be applied broadly across all sites you visit. Your privacy choices are then applied broadly across our brand and publisher partners. You can see who we work with on our partners page. Those partners will recognize your saved privacy preferences right as you visit the page, so they won’t have to ask you every time you visit to ‘agree or disagree.’ The result will be less cookie pop ups and privacy questions as you browse the web.

Consumer privacy is our number one priority. We follow these simple principles:

  • Provide you with transparency about your choices and how they impact your online experience.
  • Provide tools that put you in control of your privacy preferences and your web and app experience.
  • Only collect data necessary to provide great experiences you want.
  • Respect and take care of your privacy and your data.

Permisio aims to help you learn about your data rights and how your data helps publishers create content without charging you to read it. Without your data input into the ad ecosystem, there could be a world in which content is no longer free. Imagine a world with a lot more subscription based publishers – making it harder and more expensive to access the content you love.

Because we recognize its a delicate balance between sharing and not sharing, Permisio gives you control over who may use your data, and for what purposes, for websites and apps across the internet. Permisio also makes it easy for you to update your preferences across many websites from a single place, instead of visiting each site or app one by one. You can do all of that within the Account Home of your Permisio account.

Our goal is simple. We aim to help make your online browsing a better experience by giving you the power to customize and apply your privacy preferences across your favourite websites and apps in one simple place. We are continuously working to optimize towards this goal – from providing you with more control and transparency to expanding our partnerships with publishers and brands. All of this is in an effort to protect your digital privacy and make internet browsing enjoyable again.
